Frequency Improves on MinImum

Various authors (1,2) have tried to ascertain whether CA 125 concentrations in PF samples were significantly higher in patients with endometriosis than in control subjects. So far, these studies have not shown any significant difference in CA 125 values obtained from undiluted PF samples. In our study, using diluted samples in one-step assay, we found that CA 125 concentrations differed between patients with benign and malignant tumors and those with leiomyomata uteri and controls, suggesting that CA 125 values from diluted PF might be able to help identifr patients with malignant conditions. Our experience suggests that: a hook effect exists in PF; it can be correct easily by dilution 1:50; CA 125 values obtained from undiluted PF samples can be considered unreliable; and high CA 125 concentrations are usual and reliable in PF. The users of the IRMA CA 125 kit should be aware of this analytical problem.
